Hello Everyone!
We were so happy to see that EVERYONE came to our first meeting last week! What a turnout! Webelos is so full of wonderful experiences that we hope to share with our sons and yours.
A few reminders:
Registration
All scouts must register with our pack on a yearly basis. You need not submit a registration form, but we still need to collect the $50 registration fee from each boy. This goes to pay for the neckerchiefs the boys received at Pack Night along with all the patches and other awards the boy receive. We are able to have special events like the Halloween Spooktacular, CubsGiving Dinner, and Pinewood Derby. The fee also covers your son's yearly registration with the Theodore Roosevelt Council of Boy Scouts.
Please remember to bring a check for $50 made payable to Cub Scout Pack 318 to our next meeting.
Calendar
The Calendar tab at the top of this website it one of the best methods of communication we can have with you. All the events of the pack and our den are kept on this calendar. As soon as any changes the pack makes to their events the calendar is updated, so please check it often. If you are a Google Calendar user, there is a way to add this calendar to yours. If you are having trouble adding it from the blog, please let Krista know and you can be sent the direct link to allow the calendar to be shared with yours.
Webelos activities will require some home assignments at times. Please check the calendar for reminders about when assignments are due. Glenn spoke to the parents about the binders last meeting. All assignments will be put in the binders and your son will earn credit for what is in there. We want to make sure each boy gets the credit he deserves for his work.
Uniforms
Please have your son wear his full Class A uniform to every meeting. Because the slides and other materials have become so expensive, we were only able to give out neck slides to the new boys in the pack. We have neckerchiefs for all the boys, but you will need to purchase the slides.
Fundraising
Popcorn order forms were giving out at Friday night's pack night. We would LOVE for each boy to sell at least 3 bags of popcorn, but feel free to sell as much as you want. All orders are due by Oct. 27 (the Spooktacular night) but may be brought in earlier if you are ready.
We will be having a Show and Sell for popcorn outside of Stop and Shop (by Target in Levittown). All boys who attend and help sell will get a portion of the proceeds applied to their total sales.
You will be getting a packet with all the handouts from Pack Night, including a popcorn order form, at our next meeting.

Our Last Meeting as Bears...
On June 13th we will have our last official meeting as Bears! Our boys are getting so big, so fast and have learned many great skills during their tenure as Cub Scouts.
At our last meeting we really want to make it a fun meeting. We were thinking of having a sort of 'Field Day' where the boys can play games outside and just enjoy each other's company. Wear Class B. I will be bringing a few goodies for them as well. I am aware that one of our members has an egg allergy so all food will be egg free. If there are any other allergies that I need to be made aware of, please e-mail me ASAP so I can properly prepare.
Thank you for a great year! Please consider attending our Pack Picnic on June 30th. It is sure to be great family fun! Registration form can be found HERE and you can return it to me at our last meeting or send it through Michael at school. You can even leave things for Cub Scouts in the Northside office and they will get it to Mr. Mike.

Reminders..End of School and SUMMER TRIPS!!
Below please find a list of most of the summer events Pack 318 is offering this year. We are still awaiting information about some of the events, but I just wanted you to have an idea of the dates for your summer planning. The events are in chronological order for your convenience. If you have already taken some of the necessary flyers and/or registration forms, please feel free to drop the completed forms at my house or bring them to any den meeting. I will get everything to Rita and Lisa.
From the looks of this list, we are sure to have a great Scouting Summer!
Memorial Day Parade- Monday (Memorial Day). Meet at 9:15am (the latest) behind Island Trees Middle School. Please wear your Class A uniform shirt and sunblock. It is also wise to bring a water bottle as it can get hot. COMPLETED
Car Wash- Saturday June 2nd (rain date June 3rd). There is a fire hydrant on Wantagh Avenue (North of Hempstead Tpke) about 2 blocks in on the right. That's where we meet. Wear your bathing suit and a Class B T-Shirt (old or new...either is fine). Mention it to all your friends and neighbors and join us in this fundraiser for our pack! It is always a ton of fun! We will be washing cars from 9am-3pm.
Fishing Clinic- Saturday June 16th from 9am-1pm @ Schiff Scout Reservation. $5.00 per participant. Equipment provided for boys. Adults wishing to fish must possess a NYS Fishing License.
Pack Picnic-June 23rd Changed to June 30th at Wantagh Park from 12 noon-whenever. It will be all the way in the back (near the pool). I believe it is called the South Field. If you inquire at the entrance they should be able to let you know the exact location. This event is for all families and is usually a very relaxed fun environment. Information about any fees to be collected can be found HERE If you plan on staying all day, please bring your class A uniform since we usually have a flag or two to retire at the fire pit. Please bring sunblock and bug spray as well and any toys you may want to have.
Splish Splash Trip- Thursday July 19th 10am-7pm. $29 per scout (includes patch) $28 all others. Please make checks payable to Cub Scout Pack 318. Please give to a den leader no later that Friday July 6th.
Fishing Trip off Captree- Sunday July 29th from 3:30-7:30pm. Please arrive by 3:00 as the boat leaves promptly at 3:30 (regardless of your presence) Take advantage of the great price and invite your friends and family! $21 per person which includes tips for the crew. Checks can be made payable to Cub Scout Pack 318. Forms and payment due by Saturday June 30th.

Next Meeting
Hello All,
For the next few meetings we will be working on obtaining the Whittling Chip. The Whittling Chip is a necessary part of Cub Scouting, and is essential for boys wishing to go further into Boy Scouting. It entails learning safety when yielding a pocket knife and certain techniques used to properly handle the knife. These techniques and safety tips are very generally outlined in the Bear Handbook, but need practice and guidance in order for the boys to internalize them.
I know that many of the boys are on baseball teams this season and that practices/games force your son to miss meetings, but please know that your son cannot earn the Whittling Chip without knowing the rules and having a great deal of practice. In the past we have been very lenient with the requirements for the Bear Achievements, but this is one that cannot be taken lightly.
Tonight, April 25th, we started working on the safety rules and practiced a bit of whittling along with the Webelos group over at Northside. Unfortunately, only four boys were in attendance. We really need sessions to properly train the boys and engrain the rules. Therefore, we will also be running this session next week at Summit Lane. Please plan to arrive by 6:30 so we can begin right away.

It was great to see how many boys signed up for Webelos Woods. You will be contacted shortly and be asked to attend an information night so that everyone knows what to expect of the weekend. Mike Greco hasn't set the date yet. As soon as he does, you will be contacted.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind...
Hello All,
First of all, thank you to all of you who came to our Blue and Gold banquet. Your children were exceptionally well behaved and I was very proud to be one of the Bear leaders! Our next official den meeting is April 18th. Please be sure your son is in full class A uniform. Those who were not at Blue and Gold and have earned their Bear rank will be receiving the patch. Our Cub Master will be there to present the awards and we would like to take a den picture. We will also be making our Raingutter Regata boats on April 18th. We have much to accomplish that night, so please drop your son off in a timely fashion.
Next up? Many, many events are on the horizon and are coming up very quickly. I will have as many of these forms as I can at our next meeting on April 18th.
1. Rock Climbing- Saturday April 28th from 12 noon- 2pm @ Island Rock in Plainview.
Form and payment due by April 20th. You can give it to me at our April 18th meeting or just drop/mail it to my house. $23 per scout. Parents climb for free.
2. Webelos Woods- May 18-20.
A camping experience specifically for Webelos Scouts. I know that we are not technically Webelos until September, but with the bridging of the boys at Blue and Gold, we are permitted to call ourselves 'almost' Webelos and attend the camp. For those of you who have gone to Cub Parent Weekend, this experience is a little different. The boys are expected to prepare their own food and there are all sorts of themed games and activities. This year's theme is Harry Potter. Registration is $20 pp. Here's the link if you want to check it out. Webelos Woods.
We need the Webelos Woods form back by April 18 meeting, or by the VERY latest Friday April 20th (put in my home mailbox) as well so we can submit everything to The Teddy Roosevelt Council in a timely fashion.

The NYS Department of Conservation, Freshwater Fisheries staff will be conducting a fishing clinic for Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts at Schiff Scout Reservation. There will be instruction and actual fishing for the boys. There is fishing equipment and bait provided. Registration is $5 per scout.
4. Cub-Parent Weekend-August 3-5 @Schiff Scout Reservation in Wading River, NY. Please see the link below for further information.
5. Cub World- Six-week day camp over the summer at Schiff Scout Reservation.
This is a day camp for Cub and Webelos Scouts. Each day's adventure includes swimming and a full day of other activities which can include field sports, archery, nature, fishing, BB gun, campfires and a special weekly event. This year's Day Camp theme is Three Rings of Fun Bus transportation is provided for all participants. Camp fees are $350 per week. Day campers receive a light breakfast at arrival, lunch and a snack Monday through Friday, starting Monday, July 9th and ending on Friday August 17th. All forms and payments can be submitted privately. Do NOT give it to me. As a pack, we have nothing to do with this. All arrangements and payments occur between your family and the camp. FYI...there is a Camp Open House on June 11th at Schiff if you and/or your son want to check it out before registering. It promises activities from 10:30-3:30.

Scout Night at the NY Islanders
Hello All,
I just got an ad for NY Islanders Scout night. They offer really great prices for the seats (HIGHLY discounted) and the Scouts receive patches for attendance. It is the last home game of the regular season. My family is attending, but the ticket reservations are due ASAP! I have attached the form here. I will be collecting money and slips on THIS WEDNESDAY from anyone who wants to join us at the game. I will be mailing the forms of Thursday, so I can't wait for anyone. This is not a Pack 318 trip, just something I came across and thought I would put out to our Bear families!

Blue and Gold Tidbits...
Hello All,
This Saturday, March 24th is our Blue and Gold Celebration. It is set to begin at 1pm at Levittown Hall. Your scout should be in full Class A uniform (that's the one they wear to meetings).
There will be plenty of food for the banquet, but there is a competition for desserts. Please see the FLYERS section if you plan on entering the Parent/Son Bake-Off Competition. If not, please consider bringing some cookies or cupcakes or something for the dessert table.
The Blue and Gold Celebration also has several opportunities to win baskets donated by the dens, some families, and many of our local businesses. Tickets will be sold for our Chinese Auction (Attendees place tickets in a bag for each basket they want a chance to win). So far our donations include:

Achievements Completed at Meetings

I'm not sure of the dates we completed these tasks, but I'm sure your son will remember whether or not he completed it with us at a meeting. Please continue to look through the Bear book and accomplish anything else that needs to be finished up before Blue and Gold on March 24th.
Please go into the "FLYERS" sections and get the registration form for Blue and Gold. Feel free to drop it in my mailbox at any time!
ACHIEVEMENTS:

Achievement 7- Law Enforcement is a Big Job- We did A,B,D, F together
Achievement 8-The Past is Exciting and Important-We did B,C,D,E and G together

Achievement 21- Build a Model- Anyone who participated in Pinewood Derby did 21F

New Flyers for You

Blue and Gold Preparations
Hello All,
Blue and Gold is the annual celebration of Cub Scouting. Packs all around the country have a banquet each year to honor the boys for their achievements and to conduct a ceremony for the oldest boys in the Pack who are leaving and possibly bridging to Boy Scouts.
Traditionally, the younger scouts help decorate and prepare for the celebration. This year's theme is Salute to the Stars. So many boys came to the mini-pack meeting we had last night to create the centerpieces. Thank you all! They came out great! If you forgot your picture (like me) please bring it to our next den meeting and I will take care of it. We also need to create wall decorations. Keeping in mind the theme, each den will be creating large stars depicting Eagle Scouts throughout history and a few sentences or bio facts on each Eagle. I will bring many pictures and facts so the boys can create the stars, but those of you who have Eagle Scouts in your family or circle of friends can certainly bring a picture of the Eagle Scout and we can create stars honoring those men too!
Please continue to look at your Bear book with your son. There are so many activities that MUST be completed at home because they are just not applicable to group meetings. We (the leaders) really need your son to complete these at home and need you to sign off that they are completed. Please bring your son's Bear Book to the next meeting so we can mark their progress towards the Bear Rank.

Blue and Gold is the annual celebration of Cub Scouting. Packs all around the country have a banquet each year to honor the boys for their achievements and to conduct a ceremony for the oldest boys in the Pack who are leaving and possibly bridging to Boy Scouts.
Traditionally, the younger scouts help decorate and prepare for the celebration. This year's theme is Salute to the Stars. So many boys came to the mini-pack meeting we had last night to create the centerpieces. Thank you all! They came out great! If you forgot your picture (like me) please bring it to our next den meeting and I will take care of it. We also need to create wall decorations. Keeping in mind the theme, each den will be creating large stars depicting Eagle Scouts throughout history and a few sentences or bio facts on each Eagle. Nassau County Pinewood Derby
For those of you that placed in our den and those of you who were standing on stage at the very end of the night, please take note of the info below:
Race Date: Sunday, March 11, 2012
Time of race: 11:30am-4pm
(I would arrive by 10:00am so you will not need to wait to long to register you child)
Place: The Mall at the Source in Westbury near the Merry Go Round

Change in Meeting Date for Next Week
There will be a meeting on 2/16 (Thursday) instead of our Wednesday meeting that week. The pack has decided to have a general meeting at Northside in which the boys will create the centerpieces for the tables at Blue and Gold. Please wear old clothes since the boys will be painting. Please bring a photo of your son (preferably in uniform).

Scout Sabbath
This Sunday, February 5th, is Scout Sabbath. It is a time to attend your place of worship in your Cub Scout uniform. If you attend services, no matter the place or denomination, please wear your uniform proudly!
If you are a member of St. Bernard's Parish, please meet us at the 9am Mass on Sunday. We will sit together in the front. Please wear your full Class A uniform.

Reminders for the Week of February 1st...
Don't forget to finish up your Pinewood Derby car! All cars who intend to be in the race MUST weigh in on FEBRUARY 1st at the Northside Cafeteria. If you do not weigh in THAT NIGHT you cannot race. Period. You can send your car with someone else, if necessary. Remember that all cars must adhere to the directions on the sheet in the car box.
Please note that the race officials will collect the cars at the weigh in and store them. You will not have access to your car between Feb.1st and race night.
Please check the flyer on the Pinewood Derby Page for specific information about weigh in and race day.
It is recommended that if the front of your car is not abundantly clear, please mark it as such.
Be sure the scout's name is somewhere on the car.
For those of you participating in the Adult Derby the only specification is that the wheel base must remain because of the width of the track.

Hello All,
I thought I would start this blog to keep the families in our den informed of any upcoming events and/or dates for our den and pack. The intention is to keep all our information in one spot so that you do not have to search for e-mails to find out what is going on with us.
